Tacos El Terry opened Thursday, October 22 at 111 4th Avenue South, the former Losers Bar and Grille building just off Broadway. It is a Mexico City-style taqueria from Lettuce Entertain You, the group behind Aba and Sushi-san, and the room works the way a taqueria should: order at the counter, watch the taqueros work, and eat tacos built on corn tortillas made in house.

The name comes with the concept. Chef-partner Ben Goodnick has said Lettuce built Tacos El Terry with a family from Northern Mexico, and El Terry was the man behind the counter at the taco stand the family went back to week after week, the one they still call the best tacos they have ever had. The stand's signature made the trip north: any taco can come Terry's Way, on a red corn tortilla griddled crisp with melted cheese.

The board runs Pollo Asado, Al Pastor off the spit, Carne Asada, a Mixta of all three meats, and a grilled avocado for the meatless, each served con todo with onion, cilantro, and avocado salsa. Quesadillas come off the griddle with Chihuahua cheese, the sides are esquites and chiles toreados, and the drinks lean frozen, a frozen margarita and a frozen paloma, alongside Mexican sodas and 32-ounce caguamas for the table.

The taqueria keeps late hours, until midnight early in the week and 2 AM from Thursday through Saturday, which puts a real late-night kitchen a block off Broadway. Above it, Terry's Sing Bar is still to come, a late-night sing-along bar the venue is readying upstairs with no date announced yet. For now the tacos are the show, and the show runs late.
